 “A Building Boom?”

For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Luke 14:28

In these times of economic bust is it possible that HRC is planning to build? -well maybe.  This weekend Matt Robertson from Cogun Incorporated will be here talking to groups representing our five ministry areas: Worship and Arts, Operations, Outreach, Spiritual Growth and Pastoral Care. This is an important point in a process that began back in 2003 with our Leadership Summits.  At that time we talked about a building to expand our ministry in worship, youth ministry, community outreach and spiritual growth.  We have had the money for this process of exploration for a long time.  We are not spending any new money with Cogun right now.

The process with Cogun and our HRC expansion team (David Bushey is the chair) will produce drawings and designs for a building that would go on site at Beekman Road.   The drawings will probably show this new building on the site now occupied by  our “ Youth House.”  What we do with those drawings remains to be seen. When we started this process we were in a different place with the economy.  We consider this a time to discern what God is calling us to do in regards to building and expansion of our ministry.  We have started two new faith communities because we wanted to reach “the next 250” that would not be able to fit at the Beekman Road campus.  Consistory voted in 2006 to continue looking into the possibilities for a new building at the Hopewell site along with moving forward in our church plants.

I write today so that everybody knows what is happening this weekend.  There are still significant decisions to be made that everybody will hear and know about.  Right now we are at one point in a  process of discernment.   Together we will talk through next steps and what to do with the information that Cogun provides. For now we continue in a process that has begun and trust that the leading of the Holy Spirit will direct and guide our steps.

Yours in Faith,
