“Laying the Foundation…, with a blanket?”

This is a story of knitters, missionaries, and missionary knitters. It goes like this.

First, the knitters. There is a group in our church called Loving Stitches. They meet regularly in our Youth House, but they are missionaries. Everything they knit or quilt or make, hats, gloves, sweaters, blankets, etc., they give away. They give to people around our country and around our world who need these to keep warm.  So, when you donate your yarn to them, it will turn into provision from God to keep someone warm.

Now, the missionaries, the ones that leave the country. Our teenagers have been doing a mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico, for 10 years.  We recently decided to be intentional about our relationship with a particular pastor and church in Ensenada, and commit to a partnership. We are helping them to build the concrete foundation for an additional space in their small church. We knew that our Summer ’09 team could help do the work , but we did not know how to raise the money needed to start this project, about $2500.

Ok, back to the knitters/quilters. Barby Richardson, who leads Loving Stitches, came to me in late Spring and said her group had made a beautiful blanket/afghan. They wanted to ‘raffle it off ‘ to raise money for youth missions. She asked if we had any particular project we could use this for. I talked with Lourdes, who runs the Ensenada mission trips. We decided that using the blanket money for the foundation would be perfect. So, for 4 weeks in June and July people donated money to help build this foundation. Anyone who donated money had their name go into a pool of people that could win the blanket.

And, the winners are…

  • the givers who donated $2800 toward this foundation…
  • the church in Ensenada that received the money…
  • all  in our church who are excited about this and presented it to Pastor Candy in Ensenada…
  • our kids and adults who helped build this foundation just a few weeks ago…
  • the people who will benefit from this building for years to come…
  • AND, THE PERSON WHO WINS THE BLANKET. THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 23, during second service, we will announce the winner of the drawing, and they will get to take home the blanket.

It is fun and encouraging to see how God makes things happen when people’s hearts are tuned to what God has them to do. See you Sunday!!

Thanks for opportunity to serve!

In Christ,

Randy
