It Happened Before It Happened”

I love Yogi-isms, and this Yogi-ism, coined by Taylor this morning, is excellent. In case you missed it, it was from his sermon, and captured David’s huge mistake (sin).  The point is, he sinned before he sinned. He knew where he was supposed to be, but stayed home instead, which led to a severe series of events which could be called “Bathsheba-gate”.  THE REST IS HISTORY.

I know this story, as many of us do. But, I had never noticed these lines until this week:

“In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle,

David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel with him;

…, But David remained in Jerusalem.”

He knew where he was supposed to be, and what he was supposed to be doing, but he had something else in mind.

This morning, at second service, I counted 25 teenagers and college kids in church. I wanted to stop and speak to them. What do you choose to do when you know what you are supposed to do? When do you decide what website to look at– after you are already on-line? When do you decide how many beers to drink– when you are already at the keg party? When do you decide how fast to drive– after you are already have a carload of friends?

And then I thought of myself. When do I make the best and safest and most spirtiually healthy decisions of my life? Or, do I even make these decisions? Do I pre-set a path of protection and accountability, or do I protect paths to sin?

So, the time to stop it from happening is before it happens. Right?

I have a stone in my pocket, not only to remind me of the giants I am called to face, but to remind me that I have a calling. My joy and protection and purpose will be in that calling, not in protecting a path to sin.

The rest is history… yet to happen.

Thanks for the opportunity to serve!

In Christ,
