Beds and Bucks

This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.  Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, people will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.  (2 Corinthians 9:12-13)

My friend Marty was shouting,” Amen, Hallelujah” this week.  Marty would hardly dare  darken the door of a church.  He believes little, if anything, about the person of Christ,. But this week he drove a van proclaiming:” To Know Christ and to Make Him Known.”, as he made Christ known by supplying beds in the name of Christ to people in need.

Marty owns a furniture store in New Rochelle.  A week before this Love INC bed project came up, he shared with me that he specializes in beds.  It was a match made in heaven.  We delivered ten beds to ten homes where kids were sharing beds with their grandma, or moms were sleeping on the floor, or a divorced woman was sleeping on her couch.  It was a great witness to the kingdom of God breaking out in our midst.  Our thanksgiving offering, that needed to cover the $1500 for the beds, went far beyond that.  The total ended up being just under $5,000, which means we will be able to supply beds in the name of Christ for the coming year.

The generosity of HRC is  evidenced again and again in miraculous ways.  I am so grateful to serve a church that knows what Paul is speaking about when he says that this kind of sharing produces thanksgiving to God and is evidence of the gospel. Thank you.

With the thanks comes the challenge to step forward in gratitude as we close our giving year.  We have stepped up our giving and cut down expenses so we are coming closer to looking at a balanced end of the year.  Our giving is down about two percent from last year at this time and our challenge continues to be to increase our December giving by six percent over last year.  If we rise up to challenge we will close the year well.

Last week I saw HRC respond to a Thanksgiving call to be generous.  This week I put out a Christmas call to give in the name of Christ.  It was beds last Thursday, it is “bucks” this Friday, all in a response to the grace that we have seen in Christ.  It is the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel.  The result is thanksgiving to God.  I am sure I will be shouting, “Amen, Hallelujah” as we celebrate love in the name of Christ that we know as Christmas.

 Thanks for your giving,

Taylor
