Teach Your Children Well

I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.  They are ever giving liberally and lending, and their children become a blessing.  (Psalm 37:25-26)

This Sunday we celebrate one of the most important things we do as a church; the passing of faith to the next generation.  We will be introduced to the 2012 confirmation group.  The last two years I have stepped back into this process, and this year I am working with Warren and Lynette in leading this group.  It is a great group of kids that represent one of the most strongly connected groups of young people to HRC that I have ever seen.

I was just looking through our membership book for the name of somebody who joined the church in early 2000.  As my finger went down the list of members I saw names of kids who showed up for confirmation and then disappeared into the mist.  This year all sixteen kids that are in this group have very strong connections to the church.  It is a joy to work with them.  Not all are sure they believe, and some are just starting to sort this out, but there is no doubt that they are connected.   Two of the girls (Katy and Allie) are older and were not raised in this church, but have come to HRC by their choice through connections with our mission program.  Two of the boys (Jon and Ben) are here from Arlington, at Randy’s request, as part of our partnership with Arlington.

It is also a joy to see Warren and Lynette at work.  I recognize what an amazing gift God has given us in these two.  They have a passion for, and a connection with, young people in a way that will bless the next generation of leaders in the church.  I walk away from Wednesday nights rejoicing for the future of this church and the kingdom of God as I see these kids growing in grace and in truth.

I am also thankful for the process we use with mentors who walk along side these young people. Below I introduce the group and I invite you to print this In Touch out and place it in your bible or on your refrigerator so that you can pray for these confirmands and their mentors throughout the rest of this year.
