500- An Average Sunday

We had a 1586% increase in our worship attendance at our Gatherings service last week.  Wow, are we a growing church or what?  Actually, you may remember last year the fourth Sunday of August hurricane Irene hit, and we only had seven people at Gatherings that morning. We do count our attendance each Sunday and one of our goals for this year was to break the “five hundred barrier”; averaging over 500 people in all our services at Hopewell for the main part of the program year.  Through the first five months of 2012 our average was just under 500 at 498.

We currently have six worshipping communities at HRC: Gatherings, Odyssey, Foundations, Youth Worship, Common Ground and Journey/Respite.  This Sunday we are all gathering under one tent on Hopewell’s campus and celebrating with a picnic.  I have voiced the goal of having five hundred people under the tent in worship.  It seems like a large number to set our sights on, but if we reach that goal we are looking at an average Sunday of those who are touched by worship at the greater HRC.

This Sunday we will celebrate together and it will be the beginning of a series at Gatherings and Foundations that will look at the Twelve Steps of AA through the eyes of scripture and the letter to the Romans.  Each Sunday we will hear testimony from a person who has been touched by Christ and has worked with the twelve steps of AA.  In part this is recognition that the ministry of HRC extends beyond our worship and our outreach. For years there have been AA groups that have been ministering in our building, touching lives that have been destroyed by alcohol.  This Sunday, Chris, who has been a part of the Hopewell AA group almost from the beginning, will be sharing some of his story and the ways that this church has been a part of healing for so many.  Hundreds of people gather in this building during the week to share in that ministry.

An increase of over 1586%?- you may have to explain that number, but certainly it is exciting to be a part of a church that is ministering in so many ways to so many people, week in and week out.  I hope you will be part of the five hundred this weekend.  I hope that you will be a part of the life transformation that is taking place at HRC this fall.  This Sunday we will celebrate.

Yours in Christ,

Taylor
