An Advent Prayer

In my two ChristCare groups on Twelve Step Christianity we have covenanted together to begin every day on our knees with this prayer of surrendering our lives to Christ:

God, I offer myself to Thee-
To build with me
and to do with me as Thou wilt.
Relieve me of the bondage of self,
that I may better do Thy will.
Take away my difficulties,
that victory over them may bear witness
to those I would help of Thy Power,
Thy Love, and Thy Way of life.
May I do Thy will always!

I remember the first time I heard that prayer prayed by a member of our group.  She did it with her eyes closed, spontaneously from memory.  I thought, that is an awesome prayer and also an awesome way to start each day.  I have prayed that prayer two mornings on my knees.  (Mike Reynolds says that there are “on buttons” on our knees when we physically kneel in prayer.)  I thought it would be a great prayer for the entire congregation to begin the day with, for this season of advent.

Tomorrow our REVEAL team will reflect on the results of the survey our congregation took.  I know it will be an invitation for HRC to move deeper into discipleship with Christ.  I wonder what doors of discipleship will open to a church where everybody is praying this prayer of surrender to Jesus Christ every morning.

Advent begins this Sunday.  Our theme is: “Longing for More.” I hope we can begin by placing our lives before God and saying: “I offer myself to thee to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.”  Print out this prayer, slip it in your Bible and put it by your bedside to begin each day.  I am longing to see what happens.

In Advent Hope,
