 ‘Tis the Season

You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. (2 Corinthians 9:11-12)

I get to play Santa Claus with your money.  Through the Deacon’s Fund this last month, we were able to help people from our congregation who: 1) could not pay their rent, 2) had medical bills that were overwhelming and 3) had no food in the cupboards after coming out of the hospital.  Pam and I were able to give financial support to many who needed help outside of this congregation, as well.  In this month alone, almost $10,000 was deposited into the Deacon’s Fund and another $7,000 was given.  Truly this overflows with many thanksgivings to God.

Throughout the Thanksgiving season, we collected over $10,000 for Beds INC, and Matt Williams is calling together the troops to begin to address the backlogs of beds that Love INC has been waiting to fill.  We went beyond our goal of forty beds.  Truly this will produce thanksgivings to God.

The Mary Mission tree has already received $4765 that will go to mission gifts this Christmas.  This will overflow with thanksgivings to God.  Bruce Pearson said that one of his Christmas joys is to work at the Mary Merillat table and see people being so generous.

This is a giving congregation, for that I am very thankful. Percy Gilbert said last week that he does not ask his Sunday school class “What are you getting this Christmas?” but instead, “What are you giving this Christmas?”

That is a great question.  I am sure requests are flooding your mailbox, because every charity you support understands this is the season for giving. I add an additional request that is at the top of the list all year long; I ask you to remember to give faithfully to the ongoing work of the church.  We give passionately in the Christmas season to special causes and many are blessed, but we have seen the weekly giving in this month of giving go down in relation to last year’s.  I encourage you to give generously to the week in, week out ministry of the church as we celebrate this giving season.

I celebrate with thanksgiving the joy we are able to share.  I encourage you in faithfulness to increase your giving to the ongoing ministry, as well.

What are you giving this Christmas?
