Let’s Start at the Very Beginning

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Rev. 22:13)

“Let’s start at the very beginning; a very good place to start.  When you read, you begin with A, B, C; when you sing, you begin with Do, Re, Mi.”

I don’t know that The Sound of Music is playing in this season of high school productions, but Alpha is playing at Hopewell the week after Easter.  Alpha invites us to start at the beginning.  That is a very good place to start, because as C.S. Lewis says: “Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.”  We have an opportunity, as a congregation, to get down to the basics of Christianity in the ten weeks that follow Easter.

Alpha has been one of the best resources that we have used to help people discover faith.  It has led to more adult baptisms than any other outreach of this church.  It has also been effective in building deeper relationships with Christ and other people.  I hope that everyone is a part of this post-Easter journey.

We will begin on Wednesday, April 23 at 6 PM with a church-wide potluck supper.  We are inviting you to this potluck, no matter when your Alpha group will meet. We are already used to eating together on Wednesday evenings.  This will continue the fellowship.  If you have not yet been assigned to a group, it can happen that night.

I will be leading a Wednesday night group for those who are new to the church, or for those who may be are interested in membership at HRC.  Let me know if you are interested in being a part of my group.

Alpha is a great introduction to the Christian faith.  It is also a great place to dialogue about the Christian faith.  It will be a great church-wide opportunity to be together and grow deeper in faith and our relationship to each other.

You only have a couple more weeks to sign up; I invite you to do that this week.

From the Beginning,
