 The Once and Future Church

“Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.”

(2 Timothy 1:14)

It all comes together on Pentecost.  The disciples, who had experienced the resurrection, but not yet the power of the Holy Spirit, receive the gift and preach the Good News in a way everybody understands.  The New Testament church is born that day as three thousand souls come to faith and join the journey.

It all comes together for us on Pentecost as our Alpha groups are talking about the Holy Spirit we preach that theme on the day the church celebrates the coming of the Spirit.  We have preachers, dancers, singers and saints, young people, who shared their faith on Wednesday night, stand before the church and confirm their faith on Sunday morning,  The once and future comes together in the power of the Spirit.  This group of confirmands includes three whom I baptized as infants and who have spent their whole lives in this congregation.  The vows spoken by the church in their baptism come to fruition in their confirmation on Sunday.  Many of these young people have been a part of this church since they were very small and all have been touched by the power of the Spirit through the life and witness of Hopewell Reformed Church.  Well done church!

It all comes together for us on Pentecost as we install Steve Dambra into his ministry at the Reformed Church of Beacon.  He will share time there as well as with Odyssey.  This has been a journey of living into the Spirit’s call in his life as Good News will be proclaimed in that church that is looking for the power of Pentecost today.  Pure Joy (the band) will be rocking Beacon Reformed in a way that church has probably never experienced.  It reminds me of  Pure Joy’s first Sunday at Hopewell, Pentecost 2000, when we heard the Good News in a new way through music different than what we had known before.

It all comes together on Pentecost when the prophet Joel prophesied: “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.” It happened almost two thousand years ago and it is happening this Sunday and “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

I am looking forward to this,

Taylor
