Membership Matters

“When he (Paul) came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple.”  Acts 9:26

The disciples did not let Paul join the church in Jerusalem.  They were afraid of him. The question for our day: “is there any reason to join the church?”  I don’t imply that Paul was joining an institution.  He was joining a movement that would change the world.  For most today membership does not mean joining a movement; it means joining “the institutional church” and for many that is a bad thing.

This Sunday we start a new membership group. Why do we do that in such an anti-institutional time? Does it matter?  We believe it does.  Paul needed to understand the teachings of that early movement, so he met with Ananias to be mentored in the ways of this early church.  He also needed to develop relationships with the people of the movement, so the Jerusalem Church, through Barnabas, welcomed him and “then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.”  (Acts 9:31)

As we seek to grow in numbers and live in the fear (reverence) of the Lord, the invitation for all who make Hopewell home is to join in membership as a sign of covenantal relationship and trust.  It is much like the covenant of marriage where two people say that they covenant to live together for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, etc.  Ministry is open to everyone in the church. Leadership on consistory (the governing body) requires membership. The opportunity for this leadership is important for the health and future of the church, but the covenant commitment is of deeper importance.  I invite you to consider making this covenant with HRC, if you have not done so already.

For the next six weeks we will be on a journey, like Paul with Ananias and Barnabas, which teaches our mission, our vision, our values and our process.
