Passage to India

“This is what happened during the time of Xerxes, the Xerxes who ruled over “127 provinces stretching from India to Cush.”  (Esther 1:1)

“Why are you going to India?”  That has been the top question asked of me this week.   So before I head to Newark and meet up with our group I thought I would answer it with this Touché.

The first reason to go to India is because of relationships.  Pastor Ebenezer of the Metropolitan Mission in India is a missionary that we have supported for a long time.  He has been asking me to come to India for many years.  We have sent teams to India before and now I will get to spend time with Ebenezer and his family and see firsthand what he has described for the people of Hopewell.  I will be dedicating two wells that have been put in by our Vacation Bible School and the Gilbert family as gifts to villages.  Also, Todd VanEk is a friend who has taken over the ministry of Mission India, a ministry that plants churches throughout the country.  He is putting together a group of pastors to introduce our churches to the ministry of the mission and the wonder of India.

The second reason to go to India is vision.  When Pastor Ebenezer was here this summer he described the church planting movement in India.  This is a place where Christianity is growing rapidly.  I will be preaching and teaching with pastors who are on the frontlines of a movement of the Christian faith that is inspiring.  I hope to be taught by them and to catch their passion for planting churches and sharing the gospel.

The third reason to go to India is for pilgrimage.  This trip comes at a time when mental models of ministry at Hopewell are changing.  We had significant discussion as consistory and staff after the congregational meeting on Sunday.  I believe that this trip comes at a good time for God to speak into my life as a leader.  I hope you will be praying for me, not just for safety and a good trip, but that God would speak powerfully to me in this time.

I’m not going to India because I love Indian food, which I do, but I can get good Indian food at a lot cheaper cost right in Fishkill.

Thank you for your support and love,

From the East,
