Ministry “Lite”

“I am not able to carry all these people alone they are too heavy for me.”  (Moses)

Moses needed some Stephen Ministers. He was at the point of his nineteenth nervous breakdown and he told God that he would rather be dead.  This is burnout that is common among many pastors.  Like Moses, they try to carry the weight of all the care in a congregation themselves and it is too much. God gave Moses seventy elders to help care for the people.  God has given Hopewell Stephen Ministers.

This Sunday we will commission fifteen Stephen Ministers. These people will be one-on-one caregivers to people who are going through tough times.  I am so thankful that we have these volunteers who are willing to share the ministry of caring with me and the entire congregation of HRC.  These are the folks who make ministry “lite” and not heavy.  It is a privilege for me to be able to offer someone who is going through a time of grief a person who is willing to walk beside them.

So this Sunday I hope you will join me in commissioning Virginia Ardaix, Michelle Baer, Debbie Ball, Jeanne Campbell, Robert DeWitt, Mike DiBrango, Betsy DiSomma, Ellen Eustace, Janice Palmieri, Mike Reynolds, Helen Schweitzer, Debbie Senesi, Joe Senesi, Karen Shogren and Marlene Stager into this ministry of caring that blesses all of us as we journey together.

It is fitting that we do this on Pentecost Sunday when we celebrate God’s spirit poured out on all flesh.  It is a reminder that all of us are called into ministry, and ministry is too important to leave only to the ordained clergy.  That would be too heavy for me and I would not last long.  I rejoice that God had a plan to lighten ministry through Stephen Ministers and people like you.

In the power of the Spirit,

Taylor
