Joining the Cloud

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.”       (Hebrews 12:1)

I am not quite sure how you get into the cloud. I have an iCloud account, a dropbox account, and a One Drive account. I am not exactly sure how that all works, but I know that it is safer in the cloud.

This week we are having nine young people get into the cloud, it is not the iCloud, it is the cloud of witnesses that Hebrews talks about.  We get into that cloud through Christ and it is safe in that cloud with all those who are one in Christ.  Priscilla Conrad, Jordan Duwe, Robbin Gerber, Hunter Nuzzo, Sollande Sibblies, Allison Smoot, Scott Stensrud,  Deanna Tracy and Erik Thomas O’Connor, all stand and confess their faith in Christ this Sunday, joining the line from Adam to Abraham, from Peter to Paul, from Anne Jackson to Norma Jacobs.  It is a great cloud of witnesses who have changed the world and have changed this church.

These young people confirm the vows that were spoken for them in baptism, when we stood and said we will be faithful in carrying on the witness of Christ in this world for them.  This Sunday they stand and say they will be faithful in carrying on the witness for Christ to the next generation.  It is one of the most significant Sundays of our church year and we recognize the passing of the baton, “running the race with perseverance looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.”  Christianity is always one generation away from extinction and these are the young people who breathe life into the hopes for the next generation.

On Sunday, they stand with their parents who passed the faith on to them.  They stand with their mentors who guided them through the confirmation process.  All the church can thank Toni Viau, Lynn Reschke, Colette Varanouskas, Karen Shogren, June Nuzzo, Lynette Jee, Rick Rieland, Lourdes Kleid and Jim Booth.   These were the mentors who represented that great cloud of witnesses who have gone before.  Faith is caught more than it is taught and parents and mentors and many others have been the ones who helped these young people catch the faith.

Thank you for standing with them on Sunday. Thank you for making this a place for the next generation.  I may have trouble getting into my iCloud account, but I am thankful that through Christ we are welcomed into that great cloud of witnesses.

In the Cloud,

Taylor
