Foundational Worship

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.” (Colossians 3:16)

In 2005 we reshaped our worship structure to include Gatherings as our contemporary service. It is worship led by a band and a worship team.  Our second service we called Foundations, a liturgical service led musically by the Chancel Choir.  Foundations has always been our largest service, but in recent years it has lost some numbers and the Chancel Choir has seen a decrease in numbers without an increase of new members.

In 2014 we hired Kate Valdivia to be our Director of Music Ministry.  That job, however, has really developed into being the worship planner for Foundations and the director of the Chancel Choir.  Linda Smith is the director of our Gatherings worship and Lynette Jee is the director of our Recharge service.  Kate put together other special services throughout the year, (Good Friday, Christmas Eve, etc.) but week to week her focus has mainly been on the liturgy and music for the Foundations service.

We shared at the congregation meeting that Consistory has decided to end the job of “Director of Music Ministry” as a paid position as of June 30.  Kate is open and excited about other ways her gifts may be used as a volunteer in the music ministry at Hopewell.  We will increase Wesley Joseph’s role in planning the Foundations service.  Currently we have strong participation in the Hopewell Chorale and the Bells of Praise bell choir which are led by Edwina Pratt, to whom we express great gratitude.  We are looking to increase the participation of soloists, instrumentalists and small groups of singers to lead in music.  Wes will not direct the Chancel Choir and, thus, we are not sure the direction that choir will take.  (We would love to find a gifted volunteer director to build that choir and develop it further.)

Wes and I will take over the leadership planning of special services and the worship elements of Foundations.  We are committed to the foundation of excellent traditional worship each Sunday.  I hope that you will join us in praying that we find the gifts and the talents to make that happen well, as we move in this direction in the fall.  This summer we will have one worship service that will begin at 9:45 AM on June 25 and run through Labor Day.  It will blend the elements of our three year round services each week as we sing hymns, psalms and spiritual songs to God.

Yours in Christ,

Taylor
