Is Work Enough?

“What do people get for all their toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?”  Ecclesiastes 2 v 22

I am looking forward to sharing with you this Sunday. We will be praying for Karen and all the volunteers leading VBS this week and continuing in Ecclesiastes, looking at ‘When Work is Not Enough’.

As I’ve been preparing, I’ve been looking at the book as a whole and I am amazed at what King Solomon tried in order to find meaning in life.  As we heard from Wesley, the teacher’s wisdom was not enough. We heard from Taylor how the teacher thought wealth and things would bring him meaning but they didn’t.  This week we will focus on work and the questions he asks there. Is he satisfied at the end of the day? He also tried pleasure. He had personal singers, slaves, sexual pleasure. He goes as far as to say he tried everything his heart desired but did not find meaning. It sounds like he was going through a real midlife crisis.

It is easy to look at all this and shake our heads in judgement but we all have at least a bit of this going on in our lives. What is the meaning of life? What is the point? We try and find meaning in very similar ways King Solomon did. At the end of it all he finds meaning. Ecclesiastes 12 v 13 “ Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.” Take God seriously and do what He says.

I believe we all know this. So how do we do it?

Come join us at 9:45am this Sunday.
