Help for Houston

“I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. “ (Psalm 69:2)

The devastating pictures from Houston are before us. The hopeful pictures from Houston are before us. Families washed out of homes and shelters filled people. Good Samaritans from around the country with boats and supplies come to the aid of people in need. We are all affected and our hearts are stirred. People have called and asked: “Are we sending teams down? What can we do?”We start by listening to people who know what they are doing and know how we can help. The Reformed Church is putting together plans through World Renew Disaster Response Services to help respond in coordinated ways. Two RCA church plants in the Houston areas are helping people deal with this catastrophe. You can check out the RCA response here.

Our Deacons are recommending that we respond this Sunday at HRC through a special offering that will be taken during the last hymn. This will be an opportunity for all of us to help in a hurry as Houston begins the long process of recovery. I hope you will be generous in helping Houston. Bring a check, made out to HRC, to church. You can give on line here. Just note on your check or online that the gift is designated for Harvey relief.

I have just finished writing a paper on 167 Giving which identifies one of our generosity values: “The invitations to give will be often at HRC, but the response to these calls is between you and God. We will trust the Spirit in leading people to give.”I am sure HRC will respond generously to help Houston as it recovers. There will be more ways to help, but let us begin this weekend in our response.

Generously, Taylor
