“But get me a musician.” And then, while the musician was playing, the power of the Lord came on him. (2 Kings 3:15)

Elisha needed a musician before he could preach to Jehoshaphat.  Every preacher knows musicians lead our hearts in worship and prepare our spirits to hear God’s word.  This Sunday is Music Sunday.  It comes a bit early this year. We adjust our Foundations service to focus around music.  Our Gatherings service will have its usual format, but for both of our services, I would encourage you to extend a special word of thanks to our musicians, those who support us in worship.

On Tuesday nights our Gatherings team, Glory Bound, rehearses in the music room and prepares songs to match the message on Sunday. On Thursday nights our choir has to navigate a crowded parking lot to tune their voices to sing his praise.  Our Bell Choir beautifully sends our spirits, soaring.  They are here on Monday nights preparing for Sunday worship. Our cherubs charm every time they sing.  We thank Tony and Linda, Wes and Edwina and Michelle Frego for their work in leadership.  We thank each choir member and musician who puts in so much time, energy and passion for the cause of Christ in this place.

We can say a special thank you to Wesley Joseph.  Wesley has played the organ for us for three years and has directed the choir for two years.  We have seen him grow into an amazing musician, who has mastered our 110 year old tracker organ.  I am sad to share with you that Wesley feels that God is calling him in different directions than being Organist/Choir Director here and, while he will continue to play through September, this will be the last Music Sunday in which he is leading.  Wesley will be leading in different ways at HRC as he has agreed to direct the REVEAL team group that is working to embed the Bible in everything we do, but he does not sense that God is continuing to call him to lead the choir.

We will celebrate with Wesley at a later time, but I share this information with you so that you can thank Wesley in a special way this Sunday, and honor him by staying through the conclusion of his postlude.  We recognize the work and the beauty that he brings to his organ playing each week, along with his leadership of the choir.  Consistory will be putting together a search team to find a new musician to lead our Foundations worship, but Wesley has given us the gift of time to be able to do that.

The Psalmist says: “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises.”  We are glad for all the musicians who help to make that possible at Hopewell.

At our new members meeting on Sunday we had a discussion of some of the terms the church uses that you do not hear anywhere else.  I don’t think anyone knew where or what the “narthex” was.  (It is the room between the fellowship hall and the sanctuary.)  Nobody knew what consistory meant.  Consistory is our governing board which is made up of deacons, elders and pastors.

Consistory will be meeting tomorrow in an extended time to discuss and discern God direction in two items: 1) Looking at the work of REVEAL and understanding how that will direct us into the next seasons of ministry at HRC and 2) Our staffing structure as a church as we seek to fully live into our 167 Calling.  We have found that we do not have enough time in our monthly meeting to take on major discussion topics.  It will be an important meeting and I ask you to be at prayer for us.

Elders have spiritual oversight of the congregation and especially focus on the areas of worship and discipleship.  We welcome an elder back onto the board as John Young will fill the remaining year and a half of Matt William’s term.  Matt needed to step away from the board of elders for personal reasons and the elders nominated John to step in.  John is a visionary leader that has served on the Ministry Vision Board and as an elder and Vice President before.  We wanted a leader with experience to step in at this time.  The other elders are: Shireen Gilbert (Vice President) Stephanie Patton, Bruce Smith and Colette Varanaouskas.

Deacons have oversight over the mission, maintenance and money of the congregation.  They are led by Steve Shenkman who is the Head Deacon and Mike Boyd, Mason Johnson, Hans (aka Henry) Mikhail and Mike Reynolds.

This is a great group of leaders who commit a great deal of time to the cause of the kingdom at Hopewell.  I thought it might be good to refresh all of us on who is leading in this season of ministry and especially encourage you to pray for your leaders tomorrow.
